Pandemic Part One

May 21, 2020

Holy moly. Let’s wipe the dust off of this thing. I am currently writing this in the car while we are on the road because this is about the only uninterrupted time I get these days. That last sentence explains how the past ten weeks have gone. Now I am not saying that I will be back on the consistent writing train, but I am going to make more of a conscious effort to write more. My goal is once a week but like I said, life happens.

So let’s back it up a bit…spring break 2020. My mom had come into town to help us get ready for baby number two and everything was just moving right along. Fast forward to a few days later and we went to go support the baseball team at their tournament they were playing that week. We brought our chairs, set up our snacks, and enjoyed some baseball. Little did we know a couple hours later we would all be sent home packing because of COVID-19. We knew there was talk about things shutting down but we never thought it would actually happen. Here we are ten weeks later and living VERY differently.

This lead to schools being shut down, aka BOTH of our careers being put on halt. What a curveball this was for H and I. We quickly had to learn how to teach from home while entertaining an almost two year old and waiting patiently for our second little boy to be born. All meetings became online and we struggled to get in contact with our students. It really was heartbreaking saying good bye to them for spring break not knowing I would never see them again and even today not knowing the next time I will get to see them.

Not only did I not get to say good bye to my students, H didn’t get the chance to continue another golf season or say goodbye to his senior athletes. Most people roll their eyes and say life goes on, but these kids truly have an impact on us an educators and our lives. We have grown to love these kids like our own and with just one announcement it was all taken away. Not to mention the seniors who didn’t get to play their last season of ball or run that last race on the track.

I never intended to take this long of a break from writing, but life happened. We have all been hit with a pandemic that shifted every single thing that we have known. Like many of you, this has rocked our world and how we function in our day to day tasks. Be sure to come back for part two next week with a continued update on how we have adjusted!
