Yesterday was a great day in our house…we got the final details from the UIL and we get to have a football season as regularly scheduled! This is a big deal for us as you can imagine and I have talked about our fear of it being postponed. Today we can breathe a huge sigh of relief because we are one of the few states that are keeping the season going.
With that being said, I thought I would share with you one of the traditions that I have always done for H when football season kicks off. Two-a-days are often filled with long hours, warm temperatures, and very few breaks. That is why every Sunday before the start of two-a-days, I always give H a “goodie basket” that is filled with items that he may need for the long days. I am sure I am not the only one that does something like this but I wanted to share with you some ideas that I usually slip in there.
This is a fun thing for me to put together and he really looks forward to getting one every year. Below, I have listed some ideas. Feel free to get them all or mix it up! I usually just find a small tote or basket to throw it all together in. This way he has somewhere to store it at the field house!
- a book or devotional- we all know they don’t have much time to read but a quick devotional will help keep them pushing through the season. especially if it is a tough one.
- their favorite drink- for h, he drinks a Red Bull every game day. stick them in their basket now so that is one less thing he (let’s be real, you) have to worry about going to get last minute!
- pens- because let’s be honest, we all know they end up in the washer…
- notepads- i don’t know about your coach but he has legal pad after legal pad full of notes and formations from over the years. help restock the pile.
- favorite candy- this is another game day tradition. he eats a payday with his Red Bull. I am not saying I approve of his unhealthy habits but I can’t mess with a man on gameday.
- highlighters- to make quick notes in a playbook, call sheet, and just have on hand.
- notecards- this is more for me but along with the basket, I also write him a note every Friday before a game. I always keep him guessing and slip it into random places he will come across it on Friday nights like his backpack or pants pocket.
- gameday socks- this is another one of his game day rituals. we have built quite the crazy sock collection for him and this is what he wears on Friday nights! my favorites are the one with kb’s face on them.
- his favorite snack- h loves beef jerky but trail mix, peanut butter crackers, cheezits, or anything that is easy to grab and won’t ruin quickly.
- expo markers- do I even need to explain this one. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve watched him tell a trainer on the sidelines to find him one.
- gum- I feel like men just love to chew gum. plus it is an easy gift to buy in bulk that can last all season!
- sunscreen- we all know the sunglass and sock tan line too well. in Texas it is pretty much hot until October. sunscreen is a no brainer for those long days. now if I could just get him to actually apply it…
Thanks for following along and I hope this gives you some ideas on what to do for your coach! And just a reminder, it doesn’t just have to be for two-a-days! Put one of these together to kick off any sport!
